POV Short Film Competition
A collaboration between Apple Box Studio and the Theatre Royal Hobart, to accompany re:group collective's performance of their show POV, a live cinema experience where the 11 year old child actor makes a documentary about her parents using actors who have never seen the script.
The brief for the competition was simple:
We want to hear about your parents/carers/guardians - tell us something fascinating or funny about them. Does your Dad sing Aria's around the house? Does your Mum speak to the cat incessantly? Does your Aunt cheat at cards? Maybe your Nanna makes the best sponge cake of ALL TIME?
Tell us YOUR story, we want to see the adults in YOUR life, from YOUR point of view.
This is a short film competition open to anyone with parents, guardians or carers who should be seen on the (small) big screen!
All the rules and other information about the competition can be found on the Theatre Royal website here
The top two shortlisted films, made by Ben Conolan and Sophie Johnson, were shown after the opening night performance of POV, in the Studio Theatre at the Theatre Royal, on Thursday 17 September 2026.
Sophie Johnson was announced as the winner.
She received:
$300 cash
$100 Theatre Royal voucher
6 choc tops when you visit the Theatre Royal to share with your friends (or eat yourself)
An Apple Box Studio Membership
The judges for the competition were Emma Wilson from Apple Box Studio, cinematographer Ursula Woods, and Dr Malcolm Whittaker from re:group collective.
Sophie’s short film, Completitive Qualities was about her father Dayne Johnson, a baritone singer in the barbershop quartet Cascade Chordials.
Congratulations to Sophie!!
